CAED Day 13: The Art Of Doing Nothing

Sometimes the most important thing I can do for myself and my muse is nothing.  To give myself the time and space to just breathe.  To simply let myself be.

The amazing thing about doing nothing is that it actually does create things.  It creates calm and stillness.  It builds silent confidence.  It makes room for new possibilities.

Come to think of it, in many ways, doing nothing is the most creative thing I do.

CAED Day 12: The Art Of Embracing Imperfection

Embrace Imperfection

2 years ago Hippie and I remodeled our master bathroom.  I was and still am very pleased with the results of that project but the room is still far from perfect.  In particular, there is a piece of trim I used as a "temporary fix" for the hole in the wall left by our old light fixture that I'm not 100% happy about.  Yet whenever I contemplate correcting it I begin to foresee a scenario where I end up having to take a sledge hammer to the entire plaster wall (like I did in the kitchen) and I'm not ready to go down that road at the moment.

So, what's a girl to do but turn to her muse for a more creative solution.  Her suggestion: more butterflies (of course, more butterflies solves everything!).  Two trips to two separate craft stores later, we had a plan.  Last night I finally put it into action.

All of my required tools for Operation: More Butterflies

I used my beloved butterfly punch on some card stock scrapbook paper and then attached a couple of eyelets to each one (I don't have an eyelet setting tool, so I consulted the internet and found these very useful instructions on scrapbook.com).

Completed butterflies

Then I simply threaded some paper string through them and hung the completed "butterfly banner" over my imperfect trim work using a couple of push pins.  I had planned to use the "embrace imperfection" charm I purchased as part of the banner too, but it was too heavy, so I just attached it directly to my mirror frame below it.

My Butterfly Banner

I thought it was kind of cute after I finished hanging it last night but today when I walked into my bathroom and saw it in the daylight, it seemed more special somehow.  It was as if magic fairies had put a spell of enchantment on it while I slept.  Suddenly, I remembered how much I love my unique, quirky master bath, imperfect trim and all!

CAED Day 11: The Art Of Nature

Garden Offering

Yesterday, after finishing my garden chores, I took a walk around our half acre property with my camera and took pictures of whatever caught my eye.  I have been doing this on a fairly regular basis for more than eight years now and you would think I'd run out of things to photograph but I never do.  There are just so many variables in nature that nothing ever stays the same for long.  It changes with the light and the weather and the seasons, constantly reinventing itself.

I don't often paint directly from nature but it is a constant source of artistic inspiration and education for me.  Its colors and compositions never fail to impress me.  Nature truly is the ultimate artist.

Here are a few more of the photos I took yesterday:

These iridescent creatures seem to enjoy the Mallow flowers that pop up in random places in our yard every year.

A green "Envy" Zinnia

An Eastern Comma Butterfly was among many butterflies enjoying our grapevine yesterday

This "Immortality" Iris is the first to bloom in early spring and then again in late summer

I love the vibrant orange color of this happy Zinnia

A bud and a bloom of our pink roses

This Red-spotted Purple Butterfly is another grapevine regular

Another reblooming Iris, "Rosalie" stands tall, purple and proud.

CAED Day 10: The Art Of Joy

Reminding myself that creativity is supposed to be fun!

Every now and then I will find myself taking life too seriously.  My over-thinking, perfectionist, comparison junkie Anti-muse takes over my thoughts and everything around me starts to lose its shine.  I walk around in a cloud of forgetfulness, trying to remember what I'm missing, seeing lack everywhere. Where is it?, I wonder.  Where is this nameless something I used to have that made everything wonderful?  Was it success, approval, achievement, money, medicine, pizza?  No, it can't be, because no amount of those things would ever be enough to make my world sparkle again.

Eventually, thank goodness, something or someone will remind me.  A billboard, the page, the computer screen or a comment from a trusted adviser will offer the magic word that will awaken me from my slumber: joy.

Wise words adapted from the creed of my favorite disciple of the Goddess Cyndi

JOY!  How could I forget?  It all makes sense now.  No wonder I felt so lost and tired!  I was looking in all the wrong places for something I already had within me.  Now all I need to do is dig down through all my fault-finding and self doubt to find it again.

Lucky for me, I have just the tools for that.  My paintbrush is my pickaxe.  Paint is my healing balm.  Alphabet stamps form the words that become incantations to break that gloomy spell I was under.  And there is no magic wand quite as powerful as that of a glitter pen.

Let it shine.

I gather those tools and use them, a little awkwardly at first, slowly surrendering to their power.  Before I know it, Joy is back, fluttering within and around me like a mystical fairy, making everything sparkle like new.

CAED Day 9: The Art Of Pancakes

I Heart Pancakes

One of my favorite meals to cook is breakfast and my favorite breakfast is pancakes.  And thanks to my pancake pen, I look forward to creating them almost as much as I do eating them.

I have tried a lot of different pancake mixes and recipes and never really had a favorite one.  However, since going on a (mostly) gluten free diet earlier this year, I have been experimenting a lot and have finally come up with a gluten free pancake recipe I love.  I'm happy to share it with you here.

Ingredients for Gluten Free Pancakes

Here's the ingredients I use:

1/2 Cup Dry Oats
1/2 Cup Unsweetened Apple Sauce
2 Eggs
1/2 Teaspoon Baking Powder
Raw Honey (to taste) (Optional)
A Dash Of Cinnamon (Optional)
Blueberries (Optional)

Blending In

Here's how I make them:

I put all the ingredients except for the blueberries in the blender.  I like to put just a quick, one second drizzle of honey for sweetness.  Sometimes, if the batter seems a little thick, I might add a few drops of water.  I blend it on the highest speed for about a minute.  Then I add in some blueberries (not that whole bowl, just a handful or so) and hit the puree setting for a second or two.

I then pour the batter into my handy pancake pen so I can "draw" my pancake onto a hot pan (yesterday I drew hearts and peace signs).  I coat my pan with a little coconut oil for added flavor and to make sure the batter doesn't stick.

Pancake In Progress

They don't take long to cook and take even less time to eat.  Hippie adds syrup to his but I eat mine just as they are and we both enjoy every artful bite.

CAED Day 8: The Art Of Art Supply Addiction

I love art supplies.  That is all.

Happiness is a well stocked art cart.

Crayons are cool, don't let anyone tell you any different.

Sometimes my palette looks more interesting than what I've painted.

You can never have too many paint brushes.  In fact, I think I need more.

The more paint you have, the more mistakes you can make.

Note: This was #8 of my Top Ten Posts of 2014. Click here for the 3 rules I follow to keep my art supply addiction under control.
